All about Aluminium

The aluminium and its alloys have many positive technological properties and therefore they are one of the most popular, widely used and modern material of our present days.

  • Good formability, good machinability and good weldability,
  • The weight of aluminium makes 1/3 of the steel. However, despite its weight aluminium exhibits excellent mechanical properties.
  • Resistant to corrosion,
  • It has a long service life.

Pure aluminium naturally forms a thin surface layer of aluminium oxide on contact with oxygen in the atmosphere which protects the material against corrosion.

Fields of application:

  • Aerospace manufacturing, automotive industry, mechanical engineering,
  • Construction industry (carrying structure and design components),
  • Packaging material (aluminium foil, beverage can),
  • In powder form reductive or covering layer,
  • Manufacturing electric wires,
  • Alloying element in metallurgy,
  • Chemicals industry using its chemical resistance (e.g. for storing concentrated nitric acid),
  • Road signs,
  • Etc.

Aluminium sheets and plates are distinguished according to the surface conditions as follows:

Aluminium surface finishes Properties
Natural aluminium sheets Without special surface treatment.

Tread plate / Checker plate / Floor plate / Durbar plate

The tread plates are mainly used for stairs, steps and floor coverings. According to its structure and dependent on the field of application the following kind of tread plates can be distinguished:

  • 2-bar checker plates and
  • 5-bar checker plates.

Anodized aluminium sheets

The aim of the anodizing process is to increase the corrosion resistance of aluminium and to get an aesthetic surface. During the process the thickness of the natural oxide layer of the metal is increased artificially. Consequences:

  • The oxidation process stabilizes, the oxide layer can protect the aluminium even for decades.
  • The surface gets much more aesthetic which is important especially for ornamental elements and surfaces.
  • The anodized surface can be dyed into many different colours. This surface has a better resistance in comparison to lacquered surfaces.
  • The ability to reflect heat and light increases by anodizing which is an important property for manufacturing light mirrors and radiators.
  • The hardness on the surfaces increases which is particularly in the production of machine parts of great benefit.
  • The quality of engraving improves.
  • In case of aluminium wires ceramic surface is formed as a consequence of anodizing which is an excellent electrical isolator.
Painted aluminium sheets
  • The aim is not only decorating, however, also to provide corrosion resistance and to increase wear-resistance.
  • On the surface of aluminium sheets an artificial oxide layer is produced that can be painted during the anodizing process by using organic dyes and non-organic salts. The painted surface is sun and heat-resistant as well as wear-resistant.
