Wear resistant steel

Wear resistant steels are generally hardened or tempered and fine grained martensitic steels.
The main alloys are: C, Mn, Cr, Mo, Ni

Such steels are intended for application where wear or abrasion resistance is important.

Properties of Wear resistant steels:

  • High strength,
  • Favourable hardness,
  • High wear resistance,
  • Good weldability and good cold bending property, dependent on the steel grade.

Benefits of using High strength steel plates:

  • As Wear resistant steels have high strength therefore less material is necessary to ensure the same carrying capacity (e.g. crane). Less weight means that operating expenses can be reduced.
  • The lifespan of machinery or constructions can be extended by using Abrasion resistant steel considerably. It helps to reduce maintenance costs.
  • Generally no heat treatment, no welding of wearing surface are required for abrasion resistant materials. The sheets are manufactured already with the appropriate properties.

Fields of application:

  • Earth moving machines (e.g. tiller), agricultural machinery,
  • shovels, bulldozers and graders,
  • machinery of stone conveying plants,  diggers, mining machinery,
  • machinery of crushing plants,
  • machinery of cement plants,
  • cutting edges of machines,
  • machines that demand good abrasive resistance because they must expose to continuous impact loading (e.g. crushers).

The latest developments extend the range of wear resistant steels e.g. by CrMnMo steels. The commonly used grades are the following: Wnr. 1.7018, 1.8709, 1.8710, 1.8714, 1.8733, etc. Some of the manufacturers use their own brand names:

  • RAEX,
  • XAR,
  • BRINAR,
  • DILLIDUR,
  • HARDOX,
  • CREUSABRO
  • Etc.

Delivery conditions:

  • The hardness of these materials can range from 300 to 600 HBW.  The application purpose can require higher hardness value than the here indicated hardness values.
  • Thickness range: 2,5-160 mm depending on the manufacturer.

RAEX wear resistant steel:

  • According to the chemical composition RAEX steel is excellent for laser cutting. The material has low silicon and sulfur content. This provides excellent cutting edges and burr-free surface.
  • The RAEX sheets are produced in thicknesses from 2,4-40 mm.
  • Good bending property, however, because of its high strength larger bending force is required in comparison to structural steels.
  • Hardness:

RAEX 400: HB 360-440
RAEX 500: HB 450-540
